We've all seen plenty of videos of at home remedies that completely stop bugs. But do they all work? No, they don't. So, here are some common ones that don't work.

Myth 1:

Vinegar spray kills ants

Reality: It only erases their scent trails for a little while. The colony is still alive and well. Once the smell fades, the ants come right back.

Myth 2:

Essential oils (peppermint, lavender, tea tree, etc.) keep bugs away forever

Reality: The smell fades fast. They might annoy a few bugs for a short time, but they don’t stop an infestation or reach the nest.

Myth 3:

Ā Bay leaves, cinnamon, black pepper, cayenne, or citrus peels will drive ants out

Reality: Recent tests by pest experts showed ants walking straight over these things like they weren’t even there.

Myth 4:

Baking soda alone will wipe out ants

Reality: Ants usually ignore plain baking soda. Even mixed with sugar, it only works if enough of them eat it and carry it back to the nest — and results are inconsistent.

What doesĀ help instead:

  • Wipe up trails with soapy water (removes the scent path)

  • Keep food sealed and clean up crumbs

  • Seal cracks and entry points

  • Use proper ant baits that workers carry back to the nest (these actually target the colony)

  • For bigger problems, call a professional — surface sprays and kitchen-cupboard remedies rarely fix the root cause
